Planning for college is a big step, and understanding how to pay for it can make all the difference.
Our Financial Aid and Student Financial Services teams are here to help you explore your options and make informed decisions that fit your goals and your budget.
Financial aid is meant to supplement—not replace—your family’s ability to contribute toward the cost of education. If you anticipate a balance after grants, scholarships, and other aid, there are several responsible ways to manage your expenses.
Federal Student Loans
Federal Direct Loans offer low-interest borrowing options for eligible students to help cover educational costs. These loans are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and include both subsidized and unsubsidized options.
- Subsidized Loans: Interest is paid by the government while you’re enrolled at least half-time.
- Unsubsidized Loans: Interest begins accruing as soon as funds are disbursed.
To request a federal loan, eligible students must submit the FAFSA and follow instructions from the Financial Aid Office on accepting or declining loan offers.
Federal PLUS Loans
The Federal Direct PLUS Loan is available to parents of dependent undergraduate students. This credit-based loan allows parents to help cover the full cost of attendance, minus any other aid received.
Private Educational Loans
Private student loans are offered by banks, credit unions, and other lenders. These loans may help bridge the gap between your aid and your remaining balance, but they often come with higher interest rates and fewer protections than federal loans.
If considering a private loan, we recommend comparing multiple lenders and fully understanding the terms before borrowing.
Payment Plans
To help make tuition more manageable, SWAU offers interest-free monthly payment plans through our Student Financial Services Office. Spreading your balance over smaller installments can ease the burden on your budget. Visit student finances to learn about options.
Scholarships & Grants
Before taking out any loans, make sure you’ve explored all available scholarships and grant opportunities, including external scholarships and institutional aid.
