After months of offseason preparation, the SWAU 2025 Lady Knights Volleyball team is ready to take the court for the upcoming season. Coach David Mendoza, entering his second year as head coach, shared his reflections on spring training and his expectations for the team.
When asked how this season compares to last, Coach Mendoza noted that his players now clearly understand what he expects. “Now that I have the trust of the ladies, it will also mean that we have a smoother season,” he said. With that understanding in place, his main goal is simple: improvement.
Preseason training has given the coach insight into the team’s growth. Skills from last season have been maintained and even improved, but Coach Mendoza emphasized that there is always room to grow. “Communication, communication, communication…did I mention communication?” he stressed as a key focus for the season. Mastering this, he believes, will set the stage for a successful year.
One matchup he is particularly excited about is the fall tournament at Andrews University this October. “We set a really high bar for ourselves last year, and I’m hoping we can do another strong showing there,” he shared. The team is eager to compete and showcase the progress they’ve made.
Coach Mendoza also praised the spirit of his players. “I really love the spirit that my players bring to the games,” he said. That spirit, he believes, not only makes the game fun but also draws new players to the program. He complimented the team’s “push mentality” and their dedication to fighting for every point until the very end.
For Coach Mendoza, being part of this team is a privilege. He treasures the opportunity to foster growth, camaraderie, and competitive spirit among his players. “Sharing this team spirit and the game with each other, with new players, and even with other schools is something I do not take for granted,” he said.
The Lady Knights and Coach Mendoza are energized for the season ahead and hope to see the student body cheering them on at every game.
