Knights Golf Classic 2025
By: Johanna Penick
Crisp fall air and bright skies greeted alumni, friends, and community partners at The Retreat Golf Course for Southwestern Adventist University’s Knights Golf Classic, a tournament dedicated to funding First in Family scholarships that empower first generation students to pursue a Christ centered education.
Check in opened at 6:30 a.m., where golfers were welcomed by the Advancement Team and a warm breakfast before heading to the range. President Ana Patterson officially opened the morning by thanking participants for playing a direct role in creating educational opportunity for first generation students. Johanna Penick, Director of Development, recognized this year’s sponsors whose generosity made the day possible.
Champions of the University Sponsors were Liquid Stone Ready Mixed Concrete, Texas Health Huguley Hospital, and an anonymous contributor. Friends of the University Sponsors were David A. Coggins, Attorney at Law, the City of Keene, Texas, the Southwestern Union of Seventh day Adventists, and Todd and Melinda Goodman.
Chief James Kidd of the Keene Police Department offered an opening prayer, setting a tone of gratitude and purpose for a day that blended spirited play with meaningful impact. Adding extra excitement, Cleburne Ford served as the Hole in One Sponsor, showcasing a Ford Bronco near Hole 18 to inspire friendly competition.
During a warm lunch of Mexican cuisine, awards were presented to the first and second place teams. In first place was Pinnacle Bank, with players Phillip Vasquez, Justin Schroyer, Lanny Martendale, and Nick Zorn. In second place was Oliver Industries, with players Paul Gnadt, Jason Fautheree, John McFarlin, and Ricky Stephens.
Beyond the leaderboard, the real win of the Knights Golf Classic is the opportunity it creates for first generation students through the First in Family scholarship fund. Every registration, sponsorship, and gift helps remove financial barriers so students can thrive academically, spiritually, and professionally. “We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, golfers, volunteers, and staff,” said Penick. “Your support advances our mission and changes students’ lives.”
SWAU looks forward to welcoming golfers back for the next Knights Golf Classic at The Retreat Golf Course in October 2026.
