Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU), in collaboration with AdventHealth’s Southwest Region, has officially launched the International English Language Learner (ELL) Nursing Pathway Program with a virtual orientation for the inaugural cohort.
This innovative partnership was created to address critical workforce needs in healthcare while providing internationally trained nurses with a structured, supportive pathway into the U.S. healthcare system. The Texas Department of State Health Services projects a 40% increase in demand for RNs by 2032. The program combines NCLEX preparation, English language development, cultural orientation, and clinical integration, all aligned with AdventHealth’s mission of whole-person care and Southwestern’s commitment to faith-based, student-centered education.
The program begins with a 13-week online phase, focused on NCLEX preparation and professional English development. Upon successful completion and licensure, students will participate in a three-week, in-person summer intensive in Texas, which includes precepted clinical experiences, simulation-based training, and comprehensive onboarding to U.S. healthcare systems and professional expectations.
Leaders from both organizations expressed strong enthusiasm for the collaboration. “This program reflects our shared commitment to developing compassionate, competent nurses while creating sustainable solutions for the healthcare workforce,” said Dr. William Smith, Vice President for Academic Administration at Southwestern. “We’re excited to walk alongside these students as they take this important step in their professional journeys.”
AdventHealth leaders echoed this excitement, emphasizing the importance of intentional partnerships that support workforce development while maintaining high standards of patient care and mission alignment. Successful candidates who complete the program and pass the NCLEX will be offered employment by AdventHealth, receive full visa sponsorship, and be supported through the relocation process to the U.S.
“I am very grateful to find out about this program,” says Rebeca, a nurse from Mexico who enrolled at the beginning of the month. “I truly appreciate the opportunity. The staff are so patient and supportive. I am highly motivated and committed to achieving my goal of finishing my MSN.”
