We are excited to announce that Dr. William Smith II will be joining Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) as our new Vice President for Academics, starting April 21, 2025. With nearly two decades of experience in higher education leadership, Dr. Smith brings a wealth of expertise to our campus.
Throughout his career, he has worked across local and global higher education institutions, developing programs that enhance faculty excellence, student retention, and institutional partnerships. His work has been instrumental in creating high-impact learning experiences, including study abroad programs, micro-credential initiatives, career readiness frameworks, and faculty-driven curriculum development. Dr. Smith has held leadership positions at institutions such as the University of Texas at San Antonio, Purdue University, and the University of Georgia, where he spearheaded efforts in international collaboration, faculty development, and interdisciplinary program innovation.
With a Ph.D. in Education from Purdue University, Dr. Smith specializes in institutional strategy and student engagement. His leadership has been marked by a commitment to expanding access, fostering inclusive excellence, and aligning academic programs with workforce needs. An advocate for data-informed decision-making and faculty-student mentorship models, he has successfully led initiatives that improve student outcomes and strengthen institutional identity. Dr. Smith is passionate about ensuring that higher education remains transformative, mission-driven, and responsive to the evolving needs of students and society.
