After months of planning, preparation, and collaboration, Southwestern Adventist University’s Nursing Department celebrated a milestone this August with the launch of its first Master of Science in Nursing Education (MSN) cohort. From drafting the curriculum to receiving SACSCOC approval, the program represents countless hours of work to ensure students receive a faith-centered, high-quality graduate experience. Now, the first group of students are beginning a new chapter in their professional journeys.
“The launch of the MSN program is thrilling,” said Dr. Terri Gibson, MSN Program Director. “Students are excited to advance their careers and share their knowledge, while we extend our reach by preparing the next generation of nurse educators. This program allows nurses to step into teaching and leadership roles, filling a critical need in healthcare education.”
Students in the inaugural cohort are a diverse mix of alumni and working professionals drawn to the program’s unique blend of faith-based learning and practical application. Laura, an MSN student, shared, “Starting the MSN program feels exciting and fulfilling! It’s been easy to navigate, making it manageable for a working nurse like me.” Many are motivated not just by career advancement but by the opportunity to give back, to teach and inspire the next generation of nurses.
Faculty and staff have provided a strong foundation for these students from day one. Coach Donna Janda offers guidance on time management, Canvas navigation, and balancing coursework with personal and professional responsibilities, while Graduate Advisor Dr. Jessica Stehl provides mentorship on program requirements, clinical experiences, and career planning. Together, they create a support network that reinforces student confidence and success.
The program’s approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) assures students and employers alike of the degree’s quality and credibility. “Students completing this program will gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead in academic and clinical settings,” Dr. Gibson said. “They will be prepared to sit for the Novice Nurse Educator certification exam and step into educator roles with competence and purpose.”
Looking ahead, the Nursing Department hopes to expand the program, offering more courses, broader outreach, and increased engagement opportunities. “Our goal is for students to find satisfaction and fulfillment, earning a degree that allows them to serve others while answering a personal calling,” Dr. Gibson reflected. In her vision for the program’s future, she embraces the spirit of Isaiah 54:2: to expand the place of SWAU’s tent, welcoming growth, opportunities, and God’s blessings into the lives of students and the communities they serve.
