This summer, nine students from SWAU’s Theology department embarked on an eye-opening, life-changing experience in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They were led by Pastor Gabriel Perea for a program called “Field Evangelism,” a six-week intensive that included observations, lectures, and participation in an evangelistic series.
Junior Theology major Ashley Leon shared her experience, detailing each week. During the first two weeks, the students focused on observations. They attended an evangelistic speaker’s sessions at Adventist Fellowship, one of the Seventh-day Adventist churches in Tulsa, taking note not only of the content but also of how it was delivered. They joined the church community through prayer groups, visitations, and other activities. The goal wasn’t just to observe the message but to understand the life of an evangelist—to get a feel for what the role truly entails.
Weeks three and four shifted to a classroom setting. Lectures were held in the students’ hotel by Pastor Perea and another evangelist, covering essential topics in a crash-course style. Pastor Perea emphasized why evangelism matters and the purpose behind every aspect of it.
The final two weeks put students into action with the evangelistic series. Ashley was assigned to Tulsa First SDA Church, often called “everybody’s home church.” Reflecting on her experience, she described it as “really, really impactful.” She explained, “I think being there gave me a deeper understanding of what congregational work is really like.” What she assumed about pastoral work—preaching once a week—was completely transformed. After six weeks of observing, studying, and participating, Ashley gained a true understanding of the pastor’s multifaceted role.
From my conversation with Ashley, it is clear that this experience has been life-changing. She formed meaningful connections with church members and felt blessed as much as she blessed others. Her love and respect for the congregation and the work she participated in stood out the most. Opportunities like this give SWAU Theology students more than training—they provide transformative experiences that shape their faith, their service, and their futures. We can’t wait to see how the next group of students will grow from this incredible program.
