This page provides the steps and key information for veterans and military-affiliated students applying for financial aid and VA benefits at SWAU.
How to Apply for VA Education Benefits at SWAU
Step 1: Apply to SWAU
Before applying for military benefits, you must first be admitted to Southwestern Adventist University. Visit our How to Apply page to get started.
Step 2: Apply for Your VA Benefits
Complete your benefits application through the Veterans Online Application (VONAPP) portal at www.va.gov/education/how-to-apply.
Depending on your eligibility, you may apply for:
- Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33)
- Yellow Ribbon Program
- VR&E (Chapter 31)
- DEA (Chapter 35)
Step 3: Submit Required Documents to SWAU
After completing your VA application, submit the following to admissions@swau.edu:
- Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA
- DD-214 (for veterans) or Transfer of Entitlement documentation (for dependents)
- A copy of your VA benefit selection confirmation
Step 4: Register for Classes
Once enrolled in classes, the SWAU Registrar’s Office will certify your enrollment through VA-ONCE, the VA’s online certification system.
Step 5: Complete the FAFSA
We encourage all veteran and military-affiliated students to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine eligibility for additional financial support.

To avoid delays in processing your benefits, please submit all required VA documentation and financial aid materials before the semester begins.
- Fall Semester Deadline: August 1
- Spring Semester Deadline: November 1
- Summer Semester Deadline: April 1
