KEENE, Texas—Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) is excited to announce that students now have the opportunity to complete a certificate in Artificial Intelligence Prompt Engineering as part of their undergraduate studies.

By preparing students to effectively engage with artificial intelligence through design, evaluation, and ethical application of prompts across diverse contexts, the AI prompt engineering certificate program places an emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, and responsible use of AI technologies. Students explore the ethical, societal, and spiritual implications of artificial intelligence through a Christ-centered lens, preparing them to integrate faith, values, and discernment into technological decision-making.

Artificial intelligence (AI) prompt engineering is the science of structuring, refining, and optimizing inputs (or prompts) to guide AI models toward producing accurate, relevant, and high-quality outputs.

The AI prompt engineering certificate is structured as a two-course program, a total of six credit hours. Courses are designed to provide students with a strong foundation in prompt design, AI communication, and ethical engagement with artificial intelligence.

The goal of the program is that students complete their AI prompt engineering certificate without extending time to graduation by choosing an appropriately aligned major and electives. Upon completion, students will receive their certification when they are awarded their bachelor’s degree at graduation.

Required courses include AI prompting: minds, machines, and the arts; and AI prompting: personal, professional, and technical communication. Coursework focuses on developing a foundation in prompt engineering literacy, including crafting effective prompts, analyzing AI-generated outputs, refining interactions for desired outcomes and applying communication strategies across artistic, personal, and professional domains.

As technologies in artificial intelligence continue to reshape communication, creativity, and professional practice, this certification equips students with the skills to interact thoughtfully and strategically with AI systems.
