Southwestern Adventist University’s Computer Science Department recently launched the new Mock Security Operations Center (SOC) on Thursday, October 29. The event included tours and demonstrations for the campus and community, a chance to see the center in action, and try security-related hands-on activities.
The SOC was designed as an immersive training facility that mirrors the environments students will encounter in professional cybersecurity roles. Outfitted with analyst workstations, monitoring wall, and server infrastructure, the SOC will simulate real-world incidents such as ransomware attacks, phishing schemes, and insider threats. Students will rotate through different roles, learning to monitor, detect, and respond to threats using industry-standard tools.
Texas is projecting a 41.6% growth in cybersecurity over the next decade. Employers consistently report a shortage of graduates with hands-on training. With this new center, SWAU computer science students will graduate with practical experience that maps directly to workforce expectations.
“The new SOC adds an exciting new dimension to our Computer Science with Emphasis in Cybersecurity program,” shares department chair ?. “Students can practice pen testing, explore real-world attack methods, and tackle simulated cyber incidents while building teamwork, confidence, and skills for their future careers. We believe it will inspire students to use their expertise with integrity and make a difference in the communities they serve.”
The Mock Security Operations Center is a part of the Pick One Initiative, started in 2025 by the Office of Academic Administration to push SWAU toward innovation with intention, aligning SWAU's academic programs with workforce realities while preserving the SWAU mission of Christ-centered education.
