SWAU’s nursing program has hit a significant milestone. The December 2024 graduating class has achieved a 94% pass rate on the NCLEX, a significant accomplishment for a cohort of just 16 students. This success reflects the dedication of not only the students but also the faculty and support systems that help them thrive.
Dr. Kerrie Kimbrow, Chair of the Nursing Department, expressed her pride: “This is an ‘A’ grade for us. It shows that our students are not only prepared for the NCLEX but for careers where they can make a real impact on patient care every day.”
The secret to this success lies in the commitment to personalized care. Dr. Kimbrow credits the faculty for their unwavering support: “Our program isn’t just about academics. It’s about building relationships with our students, helping them grow, and ensuring they have the resources they need to succeed.” This level of care is why SWAU’s nursing students often refer to themselves as part of the "nursing family."
A key player in the success of the program is the Nursing Student Success Program, led by Dr. Lakicia Foster. This initiative helps students who need extra support on their journey, with tailored guidance that goes beyond the classroom. "It’s about equipping students with the tools they need to succeed, whether it’s extra study help or encouragement through challenges,” Dr. Kimbrow explained.
Looking ahead, SWAU’s nursing program is expanding. A new faculty member will join the team next year to continue enhancing the program, and the success system that has worked so well will keep growing. “We’re committed to ongoing improvement,” Dr. Kimbrow said. “It’s about continuous growth—for our students, faculty, and the department.”
This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support from clinical partners, alumni, and the entire SWAU community. "It truly takes a village to graduate a nurse," Dr. Kimbrow said. "We’re grateful for the collective effort that made this success possible."
For prospective nursing students, SWAU offers more than just a degree. It offers a strong support system, a family atmosphere, and a path to a meaningful career in nursing.
