Why Psychology?
Why SWAU?

A Psychology degree with an emphasis in School Guidance at Southwestern Adventist University is designed for students who are passionate about helping children succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
This composite degree integrates foundational courses in psychology and elementary education to prepare candidates for teaching roles and further graduate study in school counseling. The program combines classroom instruction, mentorship, and fieldwork to ensure graduates are well-equipped for both the certification exams and real-world responsibilities of guiding students in educational environments.
Curriculum and Courses
Our School Guidance curriculum blends psychology and education coursework to create a comprehensive understanding of student development, learning strategies, and effective guidance practices. Students explore topics such as developmental and educational psychology, counseling techniques, classroom management, and research methods. The program also includes field experiences and student teaching to build the skills needed for teacher licensure and prepare for graduate studies in school counseling.
Understand the Qualifications
Students must complete all coursework, field experience, and student teaching in preparation for teacher licensure and degree completion. For licensure as a school counselor in Texas, candidates must complete a master's degree and have at least two years of elementary teaching experience. Students planning to teach psychology at the tertiary level should pursue at least one area of expertise, with a terminal degree (the highest available in a discipline) preferred. This level of education also ensures a higher degree of qualification and career flexibility.
Our program prepares elementary candidates for the three State of Texas certification exams required for early childhood through 6th grade (EC–6): Core Subjects EC–6, Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR), and the Science of Teaching Reading (STR). Candidates pursuing Kinder–12th or secondary certification prepare for two exams: Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) and a content area exam.
